jamas, also spelled pyjamas ,  loose, lightweight trousers first worn in the East, or a loose two-piece suit consisting of trousers and a shirt, made of silk, cotton, or synthetic material and worn for sleeping or lounging.

They were introduced in England as lounging attire in the 17th century but soon went out of fashion. About 1870 they reappeared in the Western world as sleeping attire for men, after returning British colonials brought back with them the pajamas worn by Hindus. At the beginning of the 20th century, pajamas were introduced as women’s sleepwear and about 1920 as at-home evening wear.
The 13-year-old wears a pair of red-plaid flannel pants to Murray Junior High in St. Paul, Minn., along with a rotation of baggy sweatpants and flared yoga pants. She pairs them with a "cami" (camisole tank top), a "hoodie" (hooded sweatshirt) and fuzzy slippers. "It's both comfortable and cool," the eighth-grader says of her lounge-around style.

Trend-conscious teens look as if they just rolled out of bed, wearing layers of loungewear to class at schools across the country. The trend goes way beyond "Pajama Day," the once- or twice-a-year special event that many schools hold to raise funds or promote spirit. Sales of "activewear" to girls ages 13 to 17, including sweatpants and sweatshirts but not pajama pants, rose 21% last year over the prior year—much faster than the 7.8% rise of apparel sales overall to that shopper segment, according market-research firm NPD Group.

Retailers are jumping on the pajamas-every-day trend, with stores like Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale and Pink, a sub-brand of Victoria's Secret, giving loungewear prominent display. American Eagle Outfitters' Aerie brand merchandises sweatpants, leggings and other relaxed styles with a variety of shirts, including those with asymmetrical hems or dolman sleeves. A wide neck is key, says Jennifer Foyle, chief merchandising officer, because "girls are wanting to show their bra straps."

As with a lot of teen behavior, some adults are annoyed. In Louisiana's Caddo Parish, which encompasses Shreveport, Commissioner Michael Williams is getting national attention for taking a stand. He plans to propose an ordinance outlawing the wearing of pajamas in public.

"The moral fiber in America is dwindling away," Mr. Williams says. "It's pajamas today; what is it going to be tomorrow? Walking around in your underwear?"

At schools in Florida's Broward County, the Code of Student Conduct reads: "Garments including, but not limited to, pajamas, boxer shorts, bloomers, and bustiers, which were traditionally designed as undergarments, sleepwear or beachwear, may not be worn as outer garments."

Mount Anthony Union High School, in Bennington, Vt., has banned pajama bottoms and slippers. "If you come to school like you're going to go to bed, it says a lot about your lack of motivation," says David Beriau, dean of students. "It creates an atmosphere where people feel like, 'The next thing I'm going to do is slouch. And why not nod off?' "

Past dress-code issues have focused on miniskirts, exposed midriffs and pants worn too low. "I was hoping that once we got past the muffin-top look, we were going to be home free," Mr. Beriau says.

Many parents, though, figure there are worse looks their teens could try. After all, the pajama look isn't objectionable in the sense of being too tight, too short or too revealing.

Dara Dokas, Juliana's mother, has set boundaries. "At first she wanted to wear her actual jammy pants, and I was like, 'No, no way,' " Ms. Dokas says. They went to Target to buy pants Juliana wears only to school.

Amy Liter, of Batesville, Ind., says her 14-year-old daughter, Meg, regularly sports the pajama look. "Kids can get away with that kind of stuff," Ms. Liter says. "I think our standards have come down a lot."

Meg says she dressed up more at the start of her freshman year because she wanted to make a good impression. But this winter, she has been alternating between jeans and her collegiate sweatpants. "I'm not brand new at the school, and I don't have to prove that I can put an outfit together," Meg says.

Catherine Moellering, head of trend-spotting firm Tobe, traces the roots of the pajama look back more than a decade, to a time when Juicy Couture velour tracksuits were the rage. More recently, adult women have taken to wearing yoga pants for all kinds of non-yogic activities, such as running errands around town.

Designers like Michael Kors and Dolce & Gabbana have shown pajama-influenced styles on the runway. Last fall, the designer Rachel Roy wore a striped pajama set—with stilettos—to a movie premiere.

Ms. Moellering points to the influence of celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus, who are photographed at one end of the spectrum or the other—either dressed way down when trying to dodge the paparazzi, or all dolled up for the red carpet. "It's like, if you're not going to play on that level," Ms. Moellering says of the glamorous look, "then just don't even try."
Retailers are grateful for a teen trend that departs from years of plaid shirts and jeans. Abercrombie & Fitch pushed loungewear for the holidays. It treats sweatpants like denim, offering several cuts and styles. The women's "super skinny" ($48) resembles leggings, while the "banded boyfriend" ($68) has a slouchier fit, with elastic at the ankles. For men, the "slim straight" ($68-$78) purports to have a slimmer thigh than the "classic straight" ($68).

Abercrombie's website offers style cues for dressing up the pants. Wear the "super skinny" sweatpants with a lace tank top, it advises girls. "Toss on a luxurious velvet blazer, classic cable-knit scarf and your favorite flip-flops for a casual campus look."

The look may seem effortless, but the many elements require coordination. Guys typically wear a graphic or sports T-shirt with sweatpants, often with a pair of loafers resembling bedroom slippers.

Girls begin with the pants and layer tops accordingly. Baggy pajama pants and sweatpants are reason for tighter shirts like a camisole and a V-neck long-sleeved T-shirt. Slim pants, such as leggings, call for looser, longer tops. Sheepskin Ugg boots, flip-flops or Converse sneakers round out the look.

Thirteen-year-old Allison Fell wears sweatpants from Kohl's and slipper-like shoes from DSW to her middle school in St. Charles, Ill. The relaxed look, which she dons roughly once a week, is about comfort. "Sometimes, it's just because it's kind of my lazy day," Allison says.

Brittany Barnhart, an 18-year-old college freshman in Ypsilanti, Mich., often wore sweatpants and yoga pants in high school. She had been with the same group of teachers and students for four years, and she figured, "So why try?"

Since graduating, Ms. Barnhart has opted for jeans and boots most days. "In college, everybody's a lot more mature," she says. "Also, you never know who you are going to see."
